In the summer of 2015, a group of friends, all members of the Orchestra of Scottish Opera and Music Co-operative Scotland, came together to give a concert "Upstairs at the Drake" in Lynedoch Street, Glasgow. After this initial concert, they were invited to continue their collaboration, and give a series of six concerts throughout the 2015-16 season, and the Drake Ensemble was born. These concerts are all played "in the round" in an intimate drawing room setting, perfect for exploring the genre of chamber music; from the classical era to the repertoire of the 21st century, using a flexible ensemble of 3-5 players. The Drake Ensemble has continued to perform in this wonderful setting in each successive season; the core repertoire centres on works for string quartet and has included all the Beethoven's Opus 18, Britten, Ravel, Debussy, Mendelssohn and Janacek. Works for string trio have included the Dohnanyi Serenade and several of Beethoven's works for this idiom. The ensemble has welcomed guest players to perform quartets and quintets for clarinet and oboe by Mozart, Bliss Brahms and Britten. The Drake Ensemble has also performed at the Saturday lunchtime series at Renfield St Stephen's Church in Glasgow, for the McOpera chamber music series at St Cyprian's Church in Lenzie, for the Ballater Music Club as part of their Victorian Week in August 2017, on National Chamber Music Day 2018 and at the Skye Chamber Music Society during the 2018-19 season.
