Biography

Award-winning musicians Madelyn Kowalski and Maurizio Arroyo Reyes approach their art through joyful collaboration, commitment, and discovery. Madelyn, who came to Scotland from the United States, and Maurizio, from Colombia, met in 2018 at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) where they are now both pursuing masters degrees, studying with Alison Wells and Fali Pavi, respectively. They were awarded the 2019 Louis Carus Duo Ensemble Prize for their performance of the Poulenc sonata. A subsequent performance for the Music in Peebles series was rated "the most enjoyed concert of the season" by audience members. Madelyn and Maurizio also collaborate regularly with other instrumentalists. Their piano trio was awarded 2nd place at the 2019 Cavatina Intercollegiate Chamber Music Competition in London and received the Mary D Adams Prize. The duo has received coaching from Joseph Swensen, Graeme McNaught, Fali Pavri, Alison Wells, David Dolan, Judy Stillman, and Gyorgy Deri, and has performed in masterclasses with Antônio Meneses and Simon James.

Individually they are recipients of numerous prizes. Madelyn has received awards from Help Musicians UK, and the William Syson and Hattori foundations. At the RCS she won the Classical Concerto and the RCS Strings competitions and received the David Knox Memorial Prize. In 2018 she won 2nd prize in the Concours International de Violoncelle ‘Tremplin’ in Paris. Madelyn has also won young artist competitions in the USA, leading to a number of concerto performances with orchestra. This season, Madelyn will perform the Haydn D major Concerto with the RCS Chamber Orchestra and the Glasgow Symphony Orchestra. Maurizio is a recipient of the Governors Recital Prize for Keyboard and the William Leslie Meikle Piano prize at the RCS. He received 2nd place at the International Piano Competition of Sigüenza and was a finalist in the Concurso Internacional de Piano Ciudad de Leganés.
