Biography

Award-winning musicians Madelyn Kowalski and Maurizio Arroyo Reyes approach their art through joyful collaboration, commitment, and discovery. Madelyn, who came to Scotland from the United States, and Maurizio, from Colombia, met at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) where they study with Alison Wells and Fali Pavi, respectively. They were awarded the 2019 Louis Carus Duo Ensemble Prize for their performance of the Poulenc sonata. A subsequent performance for the Music in Peebles series was rated "the most enjoyed concert of the season" by audience members. During the 2019/20 season they will give their first recital in Paris and give a recital for the Borders Music and Arts Society at Mellerstain House. Madelyn and Maurizio also collaborate regularly with other instrumentalists. Their piano trio was awarded second place at the 2019 Cavatina Intercollegiate Chamber Music Competition in London. Future engagements this season include performances as a clarinet trio at both the Music in Lanark series and at the Leeds Festival. The duo has received coaching from Joseph Swensen, Graeme McNaught, Fali Pavri, Alison Wells, David Dolan, Judy Stillman, and Gyorgy Deri, and has performed in masterclasses with Antônio Meneses and Simon James.

As individual musicians, they are each recipients of numerous awards. Madelyn won 2nd Prize in the 2018 Concours International de Violoncelle "Tremplin" in France, is a recipient of a Hattori Foundation award, and won the Fothergill Prize for Strings at the RCS. She has also won young artist competitions in the USA, leading to a number of concerto performances with orchestra. Maurizio received 2nd place at the International Piano Competition of Sigüenza and was a finalist in the Concurso Internacional de Piano Ciudad de Leganés. Also this upcoming season, they will each appear as soloists: in December, Maurizio will perform Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto with the Glasgow Symphony Orchestra, and in May, Madelyn will give performances of the Elgar Cello Concerto in Glasgow and Stirling with the Charnwood Orchestra.
