Biography

Scottish Tour dates - mid Nov 2023, late March 2024. Inverurie duo recital confirmed.

Madeleine Mitchell is one of the most distinguished and experienced violinists performing today, including throughout Scotland and for many music societies and orchestras. She is particularly known for her introduced recitals and chamber music programmes in standard repertoire, with many successful albums. Errollyn Wallen CBE recently wrote her a work, included on her forthcoming album. She's performed in 50 countries, recently as soloist with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, with recitals in USA, Singapore, Vienna, as Artist-in-Residence at the Canberra International Music Festival, Wigmore Hall and the Barbican. Madeleine was given a major profile in The Scotsman by Ken Walton, prior to her concerts in Edinburgh and Glasgow and the Sound festival and her MacMillan recording with Cappella Nova was BBC Music Magazine's Choral CD of the Month. Her performance of Bruch Violin Concerto during the Edinburgh Festival was reviewed as "totally bewitching...her full rich tone sang strongly."

Madeleine Mitchell's widely praised CDs include Grace Williams Chamber Music, 'Violin Muse' with Nigel Clayton- including Judith Weir Violin duos, 'Violin Songs' (Classic FM CD of the Week); Alwyn Chamber Music and Howard Blake violin music for Naxos; In Sunlight - pieces written for her by well-known British composers including 2 by MacMillan; Hummel violin sonatas and British Treasures (early 20 romantic violin sonatas), Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time (in the group she formed with Joanna MacGregor) and Bridge Chamber Music.

Madeleine has been accompanied for many years by pianist Nigel Clayton, (who also teaches at NESMS so is regularly in Aberdeen) and they've given well received recitals in Edinburgh, at Wigmore Hall and performed on BBC Radio 3 In Tune. Both artists are professors at the RCM and are experienced in giving workshops for all ages and levels, with concerts.

As Director of the London Chamber Ensemble Madeleine performs with some of Britain's best chamber musicians and their latest album was Guardian CD of the Week and entered the classical Charts at no.2. Madeleine is joined by Gordon MacKay for violin duos.
