Barros Pereira- Alves

Duo - Instrumental

Instrumentation

  • Inês Alves Ferreira Soares - Violin
  • Teresa Barros Pereira Romão - Harp

Repertoire

The Barros Pereira-Alves duo performs a wide repertoire from composers such as Debussy, Ravel, Saint-Saëns, Arvo Pärt, Joseph de Bologne, Piazzolla, Bach, Chiquinha Gonzaga, Jaques Ibert and Spohr. Because the original repertoire for violin and harp is quite limited, the two musicians “borrow” a lot of classical pieces written for other instruments and adapt it for their own. Inês and Teresa also explore their cultural heritage with their original arrangements of Portuguese and Angolan traditional music. In the quest to expand the harp and violin repertoire, new works are also commissioned to composers that inspire the two players.

Biography

The Glasgow based Barros Pereira-Alves duo have a passion not only for making classical music more accessible to wider audiences but also to share the rich music culture of their home country of Portugal. Both Teresa and Inês are extremely passionate about the timbre that their instruments make and believe that the capacity that the violin and the harp have of filling a room from the smallest intimate venues to the larger concert halls is universal and can be appreciated by all. They strive to expand the existing repertoire for violin and harp by researching and arranging pieces from a wide range of styles as well as collaborating with composers and commissioning new works. Alongside their classical repertoire, the duo has also ventured into exploring the similarities between Fado singing accompanied by Portuguese guitar and the lyrical capabilities of the violin alongside the plucked strings of the harp.
