CarmenCo

CarmenCo

Aptly described in the programme as a ”pocket opera”, it was all performed by memory, - and impressively secure. Emily also took on the role of narrator, which she acted out very convincingly, as well as singing and playing the flute – quite a tour de force!.. [CarmenCo] performed with real panache....and appeared delighted with the sustained applause at the end

Dunoon Observer review of Cowal Music Club performance from Dec 2023

A real treat for the lover of opera and classical music...more than that for if you were unsure of whether you might like opera and classical music this show would win you over. A delightful tour de force.

Biography

A concert-play of Spanish music, arranged for two guitars and flute or mezzo-soprano voice, and presented as a semi-staged show with a storyline - a "pocket opera." Each musician is in character for the entire performance, and the story is told through the music as well as spoken lines: a story of flirtation, love and rivalry based loosely on Bizet's Carmen and set in warm Seville. While 80 percent music, we have stage direction, choreography (yes, we dance while playing) some props (a jacket, a hat, a flower, cards and a knife...). Comedy or tragedy? Book us and find out!

This collaboration between the Andrews Massey Duo (Tunnell Trust Winners) and Francisco Correa (another prizewinning guitarist) is a unique project featuring exciting new arrangements of classics from Carmen as well as other Spanish and Spanish-inspired music. As the characters in the story come and go the instrumentation changes: voice with two guitars, flute with two guitars, guitar duo, solo guitar, voice with guitar and flute with guitar, making for an extremely varied and fun performance.

We have performed this show in Peebles, Stranraer, Linlithgow, Ayr, and Dunoon during 2021 and 2022 - please do ask any of these promoters about our show as we are sure they will recommend it wholeheartedly!

"There certainly was a "buzz" as people left having thoroughly enjoyed the evening!" - Margaret McIntosh from Ayr Music Club, Dec 2023
